Bassai - Penetrando la fortaleza
Dai means greater while Sho means lesser or minor.
Dai means "big," describing the kata's larger movements, contrary to its counterpart Bassai Sho.
Bassai Dai is often mistranslated, The first part of the name (batsu) means to extract or remove, not to penetrate. The name to Penetrate a fortress seems to be more clearly descriptive of the attitude a student should have when practicing the Kata so for my money it is an adequate translation, if not correct 100%.
The techniques contained are not vastly more difficult than those already mastered in the Heian Kata, but implying the concept of strength and will strong enough to storm a fortress, this Kata exemplifies the idea of changing disadvantage - an initial attack - into advantage by strong courageous response.

Caracteristicas

Muy representativo en shotokan.
Bassai Dai is characterized by repeated changes in blocking to simulate the feeling of shifting from a situation of disadvantage to a position of advantage.
Much of the bunkai focus on breaking the opponent's balance and defenses against grabbing attacks.
Many techniques are seen for the first time in this kata such as tate-shuto-uke, sukui-uke, and hasami-uchi.
The ryosho-tsukami-uke & gedan-sokuto-kekomicombination is unique to Bassai kata (both versions), while the powerful yama-zuki can ony be found in Bassai Dai and Wankan. It is interesting to note that one of the most basic blocking techniques, chudan-soto-uke, is first used in this kata, and then never seen again. (shotokan?)

Es un kata muy dinámico y de gran fuerza. En Shotokan se trabajan dos variantes: DAI y SHO. Se dice que fue introducida por el Maestro OYADOMARIy sería necesario llevar a cabo un estudio profundo para poder asegurar si su origen está mas cercano al TOMARI-TE que al SHURI-TE de ITOSU, creador del SHO

En Shotokan es tan representativa del estilo como KANKU, siendo necesaria su práctica tras haberse dominado las básicas.

Bassai quiere decir probablemente algo como "Extraiga de una Fortaleza", o "Rescate" para abreviar. El primer carácter puede leerse como nuki obatsu, dependiendo de la combinación y la manera natural de ya usarlos intuidos por portavoces nativos. Significa "para extraer" o "para sacar". El segundo carácter puede leerse fusagu o sai que significan "cierre, tape, obstruya, o consigue de la manera de". Hay muchos significados que posiblemente podrían deducirse de esta combinación del carácter.

El nombre "Bassai" puede escribirse con seis caracteres diferentes. Los que se escogíeron anteriormente parecen estar repetidos en el Ryukyu Karate Kenpo de Funakoshi (1922). Una tal lectura da el significado de "extraer de una fortaleza". Otro significa "quite una obstrucción".

El último carácter, Dai, significa "grande". Los tres "Dai" los kata en Shotokan son Kanku Dai, Gojushiho Dai, y Bassai Dai, y cada uno se da al parecer que el nombre lo distingue de una versión diferente del mismo kata que se ha producido en el sistema Shotokan. Los kata Dai son el "gran" kata, desde el carácter para "grande" etiquetándose sobre el nombre. Los otros kata en estos pares son los "Sho" kata o los "pequeño" kata.

Bassai Dai es un kata muy viejo, y hay muchas versiones diferentes de él. Mientras algunos acreditan su creación a Matsumura Sokon, en realidad nadie sabe con seguridad si el kata fue creado por él o no. No se sabe con certeza de dónde exactamente todos estos kata Bassai vinieron, ni se conoce con seguridad quién creó el primero. No se sabe cuántos años el kata tiene, ni si nació en China o en Okinawa.

Se piensa que Bassai Dai viene de Tomari. Sin embargo, esto no es posible demostrarlo hoy. Hay otras versiones del kata que tiene nombres que se refieren a la ciudad de Tomari como Oyadomari Bassai que quiere decir "Bassai originado en Tomari". Algunos demandan que este nombre se refiere a un maestro llamado Oyadomari. Hay también un Tomari Bassai. Al igual que como los otros kata Shotokan concebidos originalmente en Tomari, como Jitte, Jion, Jiin y Empi, Bassai empieza con el puño derecho cubierto por la mano izquierda. To this day Bassai Dai remains one of the big four Katas of Shotokan and also a milestone for most students. Learning this Kata means that the student has passed from learning the basic Katas and has moved on to learning the intermediate Katas of the style. The practice of Bassai Dai is both daunting and rewarding and interestingly I have made note that this is the time that most students tend to leave the Dojo. Perhaps Bassai Dai represents the first bump in the road for most students as they progress into truly understanding Karate and its many difficult but wonderful techniques.
